Secretary Women’s Parliamentary Caucus takes serious notice of the Honour killing of teenagers at the behest of Jirga in Karachi

Islamabad the 12th September, 2017. MNA Shaista Pervaiz Malik has once again showed great concern and anguish regarding the blatant act of honour killing through electrocution of two under-age children, i.e. a 15 years old girl child and a 17 years old boy child in Karachi at the behest of a local community Jirga. It is reported that the decision of the child couple was carried out on the orders of a so called ‘influential tribal council’. “This is yet another glaring example of paganism that our society is beset with !” she said.

Secretary Women’s Parliamentary Caucus, MNA Shaista Pervaiz Malik has sought exemplary punishment for members of the Jirga council for taking law in their own hands and committing murders. ‘This is a heinous crime that is an offence not only in the common law but in the eyes of Allah and in Sharia’ she asserted. She further added that such criminal acts under the garb of Jirgas and Panchayats have destroyed the centuries old well regarded indigenous mechanism for settling disputes and keeping the societies/communities peaceful, intact, and together.

Secretary WPC asked as to why these Jirgas and Panchayats are still operating when these have been banned by the high courts and the Supreme court. Why concrete measures not being taken to end them, she pointed out. There is empirical evidence that the Jirgas and Panchayats, based basically in rural settings, have demonstrated myopic thinking and their lack of empathy towards women and girls that has led to increased violence against women.

Shaista Pervaiz Malik, with great displeasure, has asked for taking stringent measures in eliminating Jirgas and Panchayats and has demanded justice in-line with the new anti-honour killing laws passed recently by the government.
