Secretary Women’s Parliamentary Caucus urges Election Commission of Pakistan to facilitate ‘Accessibility’ for Persons with Disabilities to exercise their right to vote

Secretary Women’s Parliamentary Caucus, MNA Shaista Pervaiz Malik has urged the Election Commission of Pakistan to ensure verification and inclusion of persons with disabilities in the voter lists whilst it’s planned exercise of undertaking annual revision of electoral rolls in August this year in order to include all those in the voters list who have attained the age of 18. She said that ECP’s 15-day door-to- door verification would be a great opportunity to record the number of voters with disabilities across Pakistan so as to plan optimum accessibility for voters with special needs in fulfilling their right to political and social rights during elections. She said that we must be responsive to the needs and concerns of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), especially the Women With Disabilities (WWDs) who remain at the most disadvantageous position on all accounts, thus enabling them in fully participating and contributing towards the development of this country as equal citizens of Pakistan. Shaista Pervaiz Malik also urged the government to ensure inclusion of a column for PWDs in Census forms to draw the existing figures about PWDs and WWDs so as to mainstream them in all socio-economic and political arenas of Pakistan’s development planning. Shaista Pervaiz Malik has also drawn the attention of Planning Division on this issue and urged the Planning Commissions at the Federal as well as at the provincial levels to make sure that gender and needs of persons with disabilities are mainstreamed in all plannind and development projects and plans.
