Statement by Women Parliamentary Caucus

Islamabad the 1st June, 2016 Just after passing a resolution on the increasing incidents on gender violence couple of weeks ago, here, again a 19 year old girl in Muree succumbed to burn injuries after being set on fire for refusing a marriage proposal. In another episode, in Abbottabad girl was burnt to death on the orders of a local Jirga. Her crime was to help a friend elope with a young, local man. It is alarming to witness such incidents are on the rise in Pakistan, throughout the country. This is despite the numerous amendments to the Pakistan Penal Code that have criminalised these heinous crimes. It is of grave concern to the WPC and should be to all other institutions in the country, that such incidents still take place despite legal sanctions. We see this happening because the laws of the land are implemented in letter or spirit. Furthermore, law enforcement agencies do not appreciate the gravity of the situation nor understand the actual law. Shaista Pervez Malikj, Secretary WPC from the platform of WPC urges that immediate measures be taken to implement the laws that exist and to criminalize jirgas and panchayats. She also emphasised for stern action against the culprits.
